EXTRA THINGS TAKE UP SPACE AND DON'T BRING HAPPINESS.
An excess of things leads to excessive consumption, which in turn leads to consumerism. And you might well ask, what exactly is this consumerism?
Let me start from the beginning:
CONSUMERISM | Consumers feel constantly drawn to new products, even if those products differ only marginally from older ones (Consumer Education, 2021).
In other words, imagine you see a pair of pants you like, and even though you already have several others, even in different styles and colors, this one seems like a good option, especially since it’s on sale, so you buy it. In reality, you’ve just spent money on something you don’t really need. Even if you don’t see it that way, in practice it’s just one more item among many others. If you bought it on credit, it’s even worse. You’ve gone into debt over something that will actually weigh even heavier on your wallet.
Your closet is crammed with stuff, but believe me, those things aren’t what will show your true worth. That only happens in your head. You might even use arguments like “but my friends wear this brand; my friend X is going to be so jealous…,” and so on. What you’re actually doing is confusing appearance with reality, and having with being. Even if you wear those pants, you’re still exactly the same person. Nothing has changed in your personality, and thank goodness, because what really matters is inside you. Not outside of you.
Learn to look at yourself, to love yourself, and to value yourself for who you are. There is so much to you, even if you haven’t discovered it yet. Embark on this journey without rushing or judging yourself, and the next time you see an item you really like, before you buy it, ask yourself: “Do I need it? Do I really need it? Do I need it that much? How much will I save if I don’t buy it?” If you don’t really need that item, don’t make excuses. Leave the money in your wallet. It’ll come in handy, trust me.
At the end of the day, it’s just another thing. It fills your closet, but not your soul. You won’t be happier because of it, even if you have that illusion for a moment.
Take care 💗
